Can I cut slotted angle shelves down without ruining them?

We have a set of slotted angle shelves in our storage room that are about 20cm too tall for the space and they are scraping the ceiling pipes. Buying new ones sized correctly feels wasteful since the units are perfectly fine otherwise and only a few months old. So I am considering cutting the uprights down myself with an angle grinder and redrilling the holes to match the slot pattern. But I am not sure if that is a smart move or if I will just weaken the whole frame and create a wobble problem. Also does cutting the metal expose bare edges that start rusting quickly in our humid back room. If someone has done this before, I would like to know whether it worked out or if you regretted not just buying the right size from the start. Also curious how you keep the shelf levels even after cutting because a few millimetres off on one side could make everything sit crooked.
